Best Cyclone Separators for Shop Vacs: Dust Deputy vs. DeWalt vs. Dustopper

Updated Oct 17, 2026 · How we compare

Quick answer: which separator fits which vac

  • Best for most shop vacs: DeWalt DXVCS002. A 6 gal rigid tank with two lid latches, four casters, and a port that takes a 1-7/8 in. or 2-1/2 in. hose.[1][2] The Journal of Light Construction's reviewer owns it, a Dust Deputy and a Festool separator, and prefers the DeWalt.[8] Family Handyman's reviewer called it a strong contender.[9] Its 3-year warranty is the longest here.[1]
  • Strongest separation evidence: Oneida Dust Deputy Deluxe. Family Handyman's reviewer found more dust and chips in its bin than in the DeWalt's.[9] In the only measured shootout we found, Oneida's original cyclone was 4 to 10 times more efficient than the original Dustopper.[11] Its 2 in. ports suit smaller hoses.[3]
  • Big vac with a 2-1/2 in. hose, Oneida cyclone: Dust Deputy 2.5 Deluxe 5 Gal. Larger 2.25 in. bore ports.[4] Fine Woodworking reviewed the same cyclone in a 10 gal steel-drum kit that Oneida has since discontinued.[10][5]
  • Lowest profile: Dustopper PRO. A lid that latches onto your own 5-gal bucket, for vacs of 5.0 HP or more.[7] The PRO itself has no published independent review that we know of. The older Dustopper passed more fine dust and cut more airflow than a Dust Deputy in Shop Hacks' measurements.[11]

The simplest rule comes from Oneida: match the separator's ports to the size of your vac's hose and inlet.[6] A separator protects the vac's filter; it doesn't turn a shop vac into a dust collector for 4 in. machine ports (see our CFM sizing guide).

What the specs and the shootout reveal (our analysis)

Port size is the spec that matters most

Oneida's advice is to ignore air-watt and CFM figures and simply match the cyclone's ports to your vac's hose.[6] The arithmetic backs that up. A 1-3/4 in. bore, like the original Dust Deputy's, has about 2.4 sq. in. of opening. A 2.25 in. bore, like the Dust Deputy 2.5's, has about 4.0 sq. in., roughly 65% more.[3][4] Oneida says the larger cyclone delivers up to twice the airflow of smaller cyclones and lid-style separators.[4] That's its own claim, but the direction matches the geometry. Put a big 2-1/2 in. vac on the small cyclone and the cyclone becomes the bottleneck.

Every separator costs some airflow

Shop Hacks measured it. On a 16 gal, 6.5 peak HP Ridgid vac, adding the original Dustopper cut airflow by 45% and adding Oneida's original Dust Deputy cyclone cut it by 35%. A smaller 4 gal, 5 peak HP Vacmaster was affected much less.[11] Those were older versions of both products, and the article dates from 2019. Dustopper says the PRO has a larger output port and sweep elbows to keep airflow up, but no independent measurement of it has been published that we know of.[7]

What that means for sizing: our sizing guide puts small-port tools such as sanders at about 100 CFM. A vac that only just meets that figure on its own may fall short with a separator in line. A separator still usually helps over a session, because a clean filter holds airflow better than one caking up.

A full bin changes the picture

Shop Hacks found the Dustopper passed noticeably more dust when its bucket was three-quarters full, especially on the smaller vac. Planer chips and long slivers jammed the Dustopper's slot, but not the Dust Deputy.[11] Whichever you buy, empty it before it's full. Oneida's manual says to wear a NIOSH-approved respirator when you empty a bin.[12]

Rigid bins avoid the collapse problem

The Journal of Light Construction's reviewer reported that his Bosch extractor would flex the sides of his Oneida bucket and nearly collapse it when he blocked the hose. The DeWalt's thicker poly tank stayed rigid.[8] Oneida now ships its Deluxe kits with what it calls a collapse-proof bucket, made from plastic it says is up to 40% thicker.[3][4] We can't tell from the review which bucket he had. Either way, if your bin caves in, Oneida's troubleshooting guide points first to blocked airflow at the hose end.[12]

Model-by-model: specs plus what reviewers found

1. DeWalt DXVCS002: best for most shop vacs

Specs: a cyclone on a 6 gal poly tank, two lid latches, four casters, a 1-7/8 in. x 7 ft hose, static-dissipating plastic, and a maker claim of up to 99.5% of debris captured. The manual lists a 3-year limited warranty, serviced by Alton Industry, DeWalt's licensee for this product.[1] The DeWalt store listing says the port takes a 1-7/8 in. or 2-1/2 in. hose.[2]

What reviewers found: Nathan Rinne of the Journal of Light Construction owns three separators (a Festool CT-VA 20, a Dust Deputy and the DXVCS002) and recommends the DeWalt over both. It went together with a handful of screws, rolled with the work, and its tank stayed rigid on a 250 CFM Bosch extractor. He says he couldn't measure separation but believes it beats his Festool.[8] Family Handyman's Cathy Harms also used it. She liked the latching lid, the hose storage in the bin, and the casters, but she picked the Dust Deputy for its sturdier material, clear bin, and better separation.[9]

Why it's our top pick: it's the only separator here that two publications used and both rated well. It takes both common shop-vac hose sizes without adapters. It has the longest warranty and the largest bin of the current models. The trade-offs: an opaque tank, so you can't see the fill level, and no measured separation data. If catching the finest dust is your top priority, the Dust Deputy has the stronger evidence.

Fits: a 1-7/8 in. or 2-1/2 in. shop vac used on job sites or rolled around the shop.

2. Oneida Dust Deputy Deluxe (AXD000004C): strongest separation evidence

Specs: Oneida's original cyclone on a clear, collapse-proof 5 gal bucket, with a latching lid, four casters, a hose, and two elbow adapters. Ports are 2 in. O.D. and 1-3/4 in. I.D., tapered. It's rated for 50-150 CFM, weighs 12 lb, stands 29-3/4 in. tall, has anti-static parts, and carries a 1-year warranty.[3]

What reviewers found: Family Handyman's Cathy Harms, a professional woodworker, put the Dust Deputy Deluxe in her shop. She found assembly straightforward, but warns against using a power drill on its plastic threads. Her final verdict favored it over the DeWalt, because she found more dust and chips in the Dust Deputy's bin. Her one con was portability.[9] Shop Hacks measured Oneida's original Dust Deputy cyclone (the bare cyclone, sold on its own) against the original Dustopper. It found the Dust Deputy 4 to 10 times more efficient across the board, with both doing well on coarse dust, and the Dust Deputy cost less airflow.[11] The Journal of Light Construction's reviewer found it slower to set up than the DeWalt.[8]

Fits: vacs and dust extractors with hoses of about 2 in. or smaller. Oneida says its tapered 2 in. ports work with any wet/dry vac,[6] but on a big 2-1/2 in. vac, the 2.5 version below is the better match.

3. Oneida Dust Deputy 2.5 Deluxe 5 Gal (AXD250004A): for big 2-1/2 in. vacs

Specs: a larger cyclone on a clear, collapse-proof 5 gal bucket, with four casters, a hose, two elbows, and a vacuum tether kit. Nominal ports are 2.5 in. O.D. and 2.25 in. I.D., with a 3 in. discharge. It weighs 9.75 lb, stands 32-1/8 in. tall, has anti-static parts, and carries a 1-year warranty. Oneida says it removes over 99% of fine wood dust.[4]

What reviewers found: Fine Woodworking web editor Ben Strano reviewed the Dust Deputy 2.5 cyclone in the 10 gal steel-drum version of this kit (Nov./Dec. 2022). He found it separated dust nicely and was a pleasure to use compared with his older bucket-top Dust Deputy, which tended to tip over.[10] That steel-drum kit is now discontinued.[5] No published review covers this 5 gal kit specifically, as far as we know, which is why it ranks below the two models above.

Fits: a 2-1/2 in. shop vac where you want Oneida's cyclone and a clear bin, without the small cyclone's restriction.

4. Dustopper PRO (HD12B): lowest profile

Specs: a low-profile cyclonic lid that latches onto a standard 5 gal bucket (bucket not included). It has a preinstalled EPDM gasket, reinforced latches, anti-static resin, a 36 in. hose, and two sweep elbows. Dustopper recommends it for wet/dry vacs of 5.0 HP or more with a typical 2-1/2 in. hose, and claims up to 99.9% capture. It's made in Michigan by Faster Better Easier LLC.[7]

What reviewers found: none that we know of for the PRO. Shop Hacks measured the original Dustopper (2019). With very fine dust, it passed 2.5 to 7 times more than the Dust Deputy. It got worse on a lower-flow vac and with a three-quarters-full bucket, jammed on planer chips, and cut a big vac's airflow by 45%. The Dust Deputy cut it by 35%.[11] Dustopper says the PRO's larger output port and sweep elbows are meant to keep airflow strong.[7] Treat the old results as a caution, not a verdict on the PRO. The Home Depot listing (model HD12B) is the same product.

Fits: a powerful vac where headroom or a truck bed rules out a tall cyclone, and mostly coarse debris such as sawdust and drywall chunks rather than planer shavings.

Buying guide for a shop-vac cyclone separator

  1. Measure your vac's hose. Most are 1-1/4 in., 1-7/8 in., or 2-1/2 in. Match the separator's ports to it, as Oneida advises.[6]
  2. Check the vac's power against the separator. The Dustopper PRO calls for 5.0 HP or more, and the original Dust Deputy is rated for 50-150 CFM.[7][3] Expect some airflow loss with any of them.[11]
  3. Pick a bin you'll actually empty. Clear bins show the fill level; a 6 gal tank goes about 20% longer between emptyings than a 5 gal bucket. Empty before it's full.
  4. Think about where it lives. Tall cyclone kits stand about 30 in. or more; lid styles are much shorter. Casters matter if you move it with the vac.
  5. Keep the vac's filter in. A separator catches most debris, but the vac filter is what stops the finest dust. Ground or tape the cyclone if static shocks bother you.[12]
  6. Wear a respirator when you sand or empty the bin.[12]

Frequently asked questions

What is the best cyclone separator for a shop vac?

For most shop vacs, the DeWalt DXVCS002: a rigid 6 gal tank that takes a 1-7/8 in. or 2-1/2 in. hose, and two publications that used it rated it well. If catching the finest dust matters most, the Oneida Dust Deputy Deluxe has the stronger separation evidence.

Dust Deputy vs. DeWalt: which is better?

The reviewers split. The Journal of Light Construction's reviewer preferred the DeWalt for its quick assembly, casters, and rigid tank. Family Handyman's reviewer preferred the Dust Deputy for its sturdier material, clear bin, and better separation. Choose the DeWalt for convenience and the Dust Deputy for the most fine-dust capture.

Dust Deputy vs. Dustopper: which separates better?

In Shop Hacks' 2019 measurements of the original versions, the Dust Deputy was 4 to 10 times more efficient and cost less airflow; both did well on coarse dust. The newer Dustopper PRO has a larger output port and sweep elbows, but no independent measurement of it has been published that we know of.

Does a cyclone separator reduce suction?

Yes, some. Shop Hacks measured a 35% airflow drop with the original Dust Deputy and 45% with the original Dustopper on a 6.5 peak HP Ridgid vac, and much less on a smaller vac. The vac filter stays cleaner, though, so suction holds up better over a long session.

Should I get the Dust Deputy or the Dust Deputy 2.5?

Match your hose. The original has 2 in. ports with a 1-3/4 in. bore, for smaller hoses. The 2.5 has 2.5 in. ports with a 2.25 in. bore, for vacs with 2-1/2 in. hoses.
