Best Shop Vac for Dust Collection: 4 Wet/Dry Vacs Compared for Woodworking

Quick answer: which vac fits which job

  • Best for dust straight off the tool: Vacmaster Beast FLT+ VJN1012PF. A 1-7/8 in. hose that's easier to fit to small tool ports, a HEPA-media filter and dust bag, and a wireless key that switches the vac on when your tool starts.[4] Popular Mechanics' reviewer ran it with a table saw and says it turned on and off with the saw reliably.[6]
  • Best for chips and floor cleanup: Craftsman CMXEVBE17595. The highest maker airflow here, up to 185 CFM, on a 16 gal tank with a 2-1/2 in. hose, and a dust bag in the box.[3] Popular Mechanics and Vacuum Wars both put it at or near the top for sheer pickup.[6][8]
  • Best large vac to pair with a cyclone: Ridgid HD1600. A 16 gal NXT vac with a 2-1/2 in. hose and a detachable blower.[2] Family Handyman calls it its best overall dust-collection pick and suggests a HEPA filter and bag upgrade.[7]
  • A smaller all-rounder: Ridgid HD1200. 12 gal and 144 CFM per Ridgid.[1] It's Wirecutter's top shop vac pick.[5]

A shop vac moves a small amount of air fast. That suits small tool ports and cleanup, but not 4 in. machine ports like a planer's or table saw cabinet's (see our CFM sizing guide).

"Not published" means the maker's page or brochure gives no figure. Ridgid's lineup sheet lists a 7 ft hose and a blowing port on both Ridgid models.[10]

What the specs and reviews reveal (our analysis)

Hose size decides what the vac is good at

A 2-1/2 in. hose has about 4.9 sq. in. of opening; a 1-7/8 in. hose has about 2.8 sq. in. (nominal sizes). The big hose swallows chips and sweepings without clogging, which is why Ridgid says it picked 2-1/2 in. accessories to resist clogs.[2] The small hose is lighter and fits the dust ports on sanders and handheld saws more easily. Pro Tool Reviews makes the same point about the Vacmaster, and adds that larger chips can clog it now and then.[9]

So decide what you'll use it for most. If you'll mostly connect it to tools, the small hose makes sense. If you'll mostly clean floors and benches, the big hose does.

The maker's CFM isn't the whole story

The Craftsman's maker rating is nearly double the Vacmaster's, yet Popular Mechanics found the Vacmaster still cleared its sawdust pile quickly through the narrower hose.[6] The same reviewer found that most vacs with 2-1/2 in. hoses struggled to lift heavy items like bolts. The Craftsman was the exception, and the Ridgid HD1200 was one that struggled.[6] Airflow helps with light dust; suction (water lift) helps with heavy debris. Only Vacmaster publishes a water lift figure for these four.[4]

Filtration matters more than size for fine dust

Fine sanding dust is what a stock cartridge filter lets through and what clogs it. Only the Vacmaster ships with a HEPA-media filter; Vacmaster says it and the included bag capture particles down to 0.3 micron.[4] Both Ridgids come with Ridgid's general debris filter.[1][2] Family Handyman's reviewer recommends swapping the stock Ridgid filter for a HEPA filter and a dust bag.[7] Ridgid's page says the HD1600 accepts its VF3502 dust bags.[2]

A cyclone separator changes the maths

Family Handyman notes that a cyclone such as a Dust Deputy or the DeWalt separator in front of the Ridgid makes a two-stage system.[7] Most of the dust then drops into the separator's bin before it reaches the filter. Every separator costs some airflow, so a vac with airflow to spare is the safer partner. Match the separator's ports to your hose: see our cyclone separator guide.

Model-by-model: specs plus what reviewers found

Vacmaster Beast FLT+ VJN1012PF: best for dust straight off the tool

The filter sits above the tank, outside the debris, and Vacmaster says this keeps suction up for longer and leaves more room in the tank. It has a self-cleaning filter function and an LED filter-status display.[4] Popular Mechanics' reviewer liked the Synchro key with a table saw and said it handled dust extremely well.[6] Pro Tool Reviews explains that the key senses the tool's vibration through the hose and starts the vac within about 2.5 seconds. Its reviewer found the vac started within seconds of pulling a circular saw's trigger. Larger wood chips from a self-feed bit clogged the hose, though.[9] The trade-off is the smaller tank and the 1-7/8 in. hose for bulky chips.

Craftsman CMXEVBE17595: best for chips and floor cleanup

Popular Mechanics' reviewer found it picked up sawdust faster than any other vac in that roundup, and it also lifted screws and bolts that other big-hose vacs left behind.[6] Vacuum Wars named it best overall in its five-model comparison of 6.5 peak HP vacs.[8] Popular Mechanics calls it too bulky for small spaces like a car interior.[6] For fine dust, plan on a finer filter or a separator. Craftsman sells fine-dust and allergen filters for it.[3]

Ridgid HD1600: best large vac to pair with a cyclone

Family Handyman's reviewer liked the large drum, its durability and the accessory storage, and named it the best overall pick in its dust collector roundup. Their main complaint was the stock filter.[7] Vacuum Wars ranked Ridgid's NXT 16 gal second overall and best at picking up water.[8] The blower lifts off the top for outdoor work.[2]

Ridgid HD1200: a smaller all-rounder

Wirecutter's top pick is the HD1200, which it calls capable and powerful, easy to move around for its size, and well equipped with attachments.[5] Popular Mechanics named it best for project cleanup: quick on sawdust, but weaker on heavy debris, and it has no wet filter.[6] It has the shortest cord here, 15 ft.[1]

Also considered

DeWalt StealthSonic 12 gal (DXV12P-QT). Wirecutter recommends it if you want a much quieter vac and likes its onboard accessory storage, but notes its hose has no swiveling end and the vac is bulky.[5] Popular Mechanics names it best for wet messes.[6] We left it out of the comparison until we can confirm its specs from DeWalt.

Buying guide for a dust-collection shop vac

Frequently asked questions

What is the best shop vac for dust collection?

For connecting to sanders and saws, the Vacmaster Beast FLT+ VJN1012PF: it has a 1-7/8 in. hose, a HEPA-media filter and a key that starts the vac with the tool. For general chip and floor cleanup, the Craftsman CMXEVBE17595 has the highest maker airflow of the four.

Can a shop vac replace a dust collector?

For small tool ports and cleanup, yes. For 4 in. ports on planers, jointers and table saw cabinets, no: those need far more airflow than a shop vac moves.

Is a 1-7/8 in. or 2-1/2 in. hose better for woodworking?

A 1-7/8 in. hose fits tool ports more easily and is lighter to handle. A 2-1/2 in. hose resists clogging with chips and suits floor cleanup and most cyclone separators.

Do I need a HEPA filter on a shop vac?

For fine sanding dust, a HEPA-rated filter and a dust bag catch much more than a stock general debris filter. Family Handyman recommends that upgrade for the Ridgid.

Should I add a cyclone separator?

If you collect a lot of dust, yes. It catches most debris before the filter, so the filter clogs less, but it costs some airflow.
